Two million people will soon be living in Vienna. This does not mean, however, that there will be more cars on the road, harming both quality of life and the environment. In actual fact, the degree of motorisation is currently declining.
The proportion of journeys made by car is projected to fall to 20 percent by 2015 as a result of the expansion of public transport.
Wiener Linien wants to break the one-billion-passenger mark as early as 2020. The plan is also to have more people using public transport to commute between the city and the surrounding area.
